HOLDERS Bradford City finally progressed to the quarter-finals of this season's West Riding County Women's Cup competition when, after three postponements, second-round opponents Wetherby Athletic staged the game on the 3G artificial pitch at Middleton.

Conditions were treacherous but City adapted much the better and ran out 8-0 winners to set up a clash at last season's final opponents Farsley Celtic.

The Wetherby defence held firm until just before half-time, when Sarah Danby broke the deadlock, but it was largely all one way after the break as debutant Amanda Ellsworth struck twice and Katie Nutter, Danielle Whitham, Abi Lee, Hannah Campbell and Chantelle O'Hara completed the scoring.

However, the frustration goes on for Brighouse Athletic as their County Cup tie at home to Ossett Albion once again fell foul of the weather.

This is now the only outstanding tie and the winners have been drawn at home to FA Women's Premier League (North) side Guiseley Vixens in the quarter-finals on January 17. In the remaining ties, Brayton Belles host Leeds and Brighouse Town play Tingley reserves.

In one of the few games to be played last week, the Vixens went to Preston North End in the FA Women's Premier League.

But despite taking a 30th-minute lead through Tanya Rich, the gale-force winds proved their undoing as Preston ran in four goals without reply in the second half.

Guiseley will be hoping for better luck tomorrow when they travel to face a Loughborough side just one point ahead of them, knowing victory will lift them off the bottom for the first time this season.

Dan Robinson, a former Bradford City coach, saw his Ossett Town side stay in contention for the West Riding League Premier Division title when two goals from Danielle Sidebottom helped secure a vital point from a 3-3 draw in a mud bath at Brayton.

It is League Cup week in the FA Women's Premier League, with Bradford City at Stoke City, while their second team are at home to Blackburn Rovers in the Reserve Division.

In the West Riding League, Bradford Park Avenue are at home to Brayton in a Premier Division fixture while First Division leaders Bradford City A are at home to Ilkley Town.
