GRANGEFIELD Old Boys had to work tirelessly to defeat hosts Leeds Modernians in a game of missed chances in the first round of the Leeds & District FA Saturday Senior Challenge Cup.

Mods took the lead when Ben Turner lobbed keeper Matthew Scotter, who then made an exceptional save by diving full length to tip a well-hit shot around a post.

Matt Tomlinson equalised after an hour with a powerful left-footed drive into the top right-hand corner, and substitute Josh Spencer's low cross gave Tomlinson the opportunity to win it and book a round-two tie against Leeds Medics & Dentists.

In the Yorkshire Amateur League Premier Division, 2014-15 runners-up Farsley Celtic Juniors missed a golden chance by losing 3-1 to Farnley Sports, who were down to the bare bones.

It all started so well for Celtic too as a fifth-minute corner pitched on the six-yard line and ricocheted in off Shaun Stephenson for an own goal but that was Celtic's last glory in a feisty encounter as Sports went top.

Drighlington are leading the way in Division One with three wins out of three but they were given a stern test by visitors Dewsbury Rangers.

The hosts got the only goal when a Joe Hirst cross was deflected into his own net by a defender, Dewsbury thus losing their 100 per cent record.

Leeds Medics & Dentists Thirds have improved since last season and tested Grangefield Old Boys to the full before going down 2-1, the pacy Sam Russell getting both Grangefield goals.

Super sub Mike Hall settled the Division Two derby at Churwell Lions by netting twice for Gildersome Spurs Old Boys in the second half of their 4-1 victory.

Jason Hardcastle's goal for Spurs separated the teams at half-time, and he also scored in the second half as they kept their perfect record for the season against a promoted side who have still to get off the mark.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves needed a stiff half-time team talk before defeating visitors Woodkirk Valley 3-1, who led at the interval courtesy of a pin-point 30-yard lob.

Joshua Sanz-Carvell equalised as early as the 47th minute, and Adam Jesusco (63 minutes) and Steve Wells (75) completed the comeback.

In Division Five, Dewsbury Rangers and Drighlington's second strings met in a reverse encounter from their first teams, and there was a different outcome as Rangers won 3-0 on the back of a dominant second-half display.

It was their their first win of the campaign and ended Drighlington's unbeaten record.
