MARFLITT Trophy winners Grangefield Old Boys have hit the ground running as they bid to go one better in the Yorkshire Amateur League.

Last season's Premier Division runners-up were 3-1 ahead by half-time in their derby with visitors Stanningley Old Boys, thanks to goals by Matt Tomlinson, Kristian Dacre and Ritchie Banks.

Grangefield keeper Phil Gill faced two penalties in 90 seconds late in the first half, pushing the first for a corner but being beaten by the second.

The elusive Matty Dolan added two goals in the second half for the hosts before Stanningley grabbed a late second. James Allen and John Mallinson were on target for the Old Boys.

Farsley Celtic Juniors won the clash of promoted teams 3-1 at Wigton Moor.

Highlight of the match was the 40-yard drive by Farsley's Luke Gordon in the 55th minute, which made it 1-1. Juniors then added a debut goal by Alex Gyte in the 65th minute and the clincher from 16-year-old Joe Firth 11 minutes later, the latter continuing the form he showed at the end of last season.

Calverley United had seven squad members absent and suffered two serious head injuries during the match but still won 1-0 at Old Modernians in the Championship Division.

United didn't win a game until the fifth week last season but Richard Wells' 76th-minute strike changed all that this time around but they still needed keeper Will Hardaker in top form, while Kale Thoma was their man of the match.

Grangefield Old Boys' Reserves, promoted to Division One, would have gained a point at least a point but for squandering scoring opportunities at Alwoodley Reserves.

Dan Cuff and Glenn Metcalfe netted for the losers in what was an excellent contest.

Connor Firth's hat-trick secured a point in a 3-3 draw at home to Collingham Juniors Old Boys in another tasty fixture.

Much-changed St Bede's were unrecognisable from the team that were relegated last season but their determined play was not enough for victory at Colton Athletic, who were promoted in 2013-14. Liam Drake netted for Bede's in the 3-1 defeat.

Bainbridge scored some choice goals in their 4-0 Division Three victory over Middleton Park Reserves.

Shoaib Hussain's spectacular diving header made it 2-0 just before half-time and left back Hassan Iqbal's venomous 25-yard drive extended the lead three minutes into the second half.

Then a wonderful through ball to Hussain sprang the offside trap, an unselfish square ball putting Razziq Ali in for his second.

Heckmondwike Grammar School Old Boys for once made a bright start, winning 6-4 at FC Headingley Reserves, whose goals came from Alistair Keetley (2), Ian Fraser and Andrew Hume. Patrick Davies (3), Gordon Garrick, Dale Hampton and Darren Harwood were on target for the Old Boys.

There was no joy for Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves, however, on their league debut as they went down 2-0 at home to Ealandians Reserves.

The goals came from Matty Holroyd and Mike Rutheven in the 50th and 89th minutes respectively but both teams showed enough to signal that they will be in the running for honours at the end of the campaign.
