NON-league newcomers Campion could hardly have had a better start to life in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League as they top the Division One table going into this weekend.

Campion are unbeaten after three games and have already banked seven points. Yet the two that got away, when James Bicknell's men were held to a 3-3 draw in their first-ever home game under floodlights on Wednesday, irked the boss.

"It was definitely disappointing to only get a point at home against Glasshoughton Welfare in midweek," said Bicknell.

"In the last ten or 15 minutes we were creating all of the chances and dominating possession.

"We had about four really good chances to win it and on another night we would have taken at least two of those. I thought we looked fitter as well and that helped us finish strongly.

"Everyone enjoyed the night though, the first time under lights, and Glasshoughton were very complimentary about out football and our club, which is always nice when it comes from an opponent.

"It has all been brilliant, to be honest, and we had no idea what to expect. It has been into the unknown for us and obviously we wanted as many points on the board as possible but we started with two away games.

"No-one knew how we would get on – but if someone had offered us seven points from two away games and a midweek at home, I would have snatched their hand off, so you've got to say it's been very positive."

Campion had to install the floodlights at Scotchman Road as part of the ground grading criteria to make the step up. The club's committee have worked tirelessly to raise the funds to make it happen and it was worth the concerted effort.

Bicknell said: "It was a great night for the club. I'm glad that it didn't end in a defeat but I'm not sure that it would have mattered. Everyone was just so pleased with how far we've come.

"It was a bit different for management and players because that's the first time we've been on the pitch, at our own ground, under lights.

"We hadn't trained under them or had a practice game, in fact the only time they had been switched on before Wednesday night was when they tested them."
