WEST Bowling edged into the last 16 of the West Riding County FA Sunday Cup after beating Woodkirk Valley in a penalty shoot-out.

The game was switched to Emsley's recreation ground due to the Kirklees club's ground being unplayable and Bowling soon had them on the back foot.

It took until the 40th minute before Bowling made the breakthrough after a weaving run by Aidan Day, who beat two men before passing to Chris Wood and his fierce shot deflected past the keeper.

Five minutes later and Wood scored again with a 30-yard free-kick to make it 2-0 at the interval.

Woodkirk pulled a goal back after 74 minutes through substitute James Tessayman.

This lifted the visitors and, in the dying seconds, a flick header from David Murphy found the net to restore parity and take the game to penalties.

The visitors took the first spot-kick but Bowling goalkeeper Ashley Onitiri put his hand up and forced the ball over the bar.

After Wood and Day had scored, Onitiri saved another attempt and Andrew Gallagher scored before Damian Melvin stepped up to take the decisive penalty to make it 4-2.

Bowling will now be attempting to get the pitch fit for this coming weekend, when they are due to host Chapeltown Fforde Green in the fourth round.

Thornton United also progressed by giving a class performance against Huddersfield league side Kirk Deighton Rangers, winning 9-2.

Hat-tricks from Dan Cunningham and Dave Wilson, added to a brace from Emmot Parr-Gallagher and a strike from skipper Ryan Canning, eased the Bradford Sunday Alliance League champions into the last eight.

Oakenshaw proved too strong for fellow Premier outfit Ventus United in an all-Alliance tie and won 3-1 to progress.

In the County Trophy quarter-finals, Grass Greener United's progress was halted by Beechwood in a high-scoring match after a penalty shoot-out.

Greener scored with Rob Coulter's hat-trick plus goals from Chris White, Craig Wiseman and a penalty by James Small.

But the shoot-out saw all three players miss their spot-kicks and the Leeds team progressed 3-0.

Thornton United's second-team match against Shepherd's Arms was abandoned due to a serious injury and will be replayed this coming Sunday.

There was a sprinkling of league action and one Premier Division game survived the weather, with George Hotel beating Bolton Woods 4-2 in a battle at the bottom.

In Division 2A, Titans ran amok and won 9-1 against Turf despite loosing their goalkeeper Matt Farrell after 10 minutes and playing the rest of the match with ten men. Mick Dougan hit six to bring his total to 37 for the season.

The top-of-the-table Division 3A battle between East Bierley and Parry Lane finished in a 3-0 victory for the visitors in poor conditions.

All the goals came in the first half, with John Glenn logging a brace – including a fabulous diving header – and a strike from Kieran Suddarts.

This result means that leaders Parry Lane moved four points ahead of their second-placed rivals with a match in hand. Thornton United's third team and AFC Thornbury are also in the mix at the top of the table.
