WAY back in 1984 when Frankie Goes To Hollywood topped the charts with Two Tribes there was another number one.

Albion Sports elevated Kulwinder Sandhu to the hot-seat and before George Michael and his Careless Whisper had knocked Holly Johnson and Co off the top, the Lions’ manager had played his first friendly fixtures.

Now, 32 years later, Sandhu is still number one at Albion and leading them on an assault for promotion to the Evo-Stik League.

Albion had to move from their home at Myra Shay to progress up the football pyramid and after a spell as tenants at Horsfall Stadium, they signed an agreement with Farsley Celtic to share Throstle Nest.

Sandhu said: “Thirty two years is frightening, it’s too long!

“I mean that but don’t get me wrong because I do enjoy it. I wonder why but I must be daft.

“I keep on because I love the club and my dream for Albion is for them to have their own ground in Bradford.

“But that is up to the ground-grading criteria for this league and above.”

Sandhu stressed that it is not just him that has spent almost a lifetime building the club up to its present standing. There is a nucleus of hard-working people going above and beyond the call of duty.

He added: “We’ve got our chairman Kultar Singh, Jaj Singh our club secretary and Jaj Basi the treasurer – they are the important people behind the scenes.

“They have been here as long as me – well Jaj has ‘only’ done about 18 years!

“They take care of business and I concentrate on the football side. I keep asking them for more good players but they hold the purse strings and money is the key.

“If we had our own ground we could generate income which would improve the club.

“Everyone here at the club is doing everything in their power – as they always have.”
