Winger Andy Robinson is hoping Bristol City will give his former Swansea City team-mate Lee Trundle a 33rd birthday present by letting him remain at Leeds United.

Trundle’s loan spell runs out after Monday night’s home game against Millwall and the striker’s birthday is on Tuesday.

Leeds wanted to stretch his stay until the end of the season before the January window closed but Bristol were keen to negotiate a permanent transfer, with cash changing hands.

Now United are hoping the Ashton Gate hierarchy will have a change of heart, enabling Trundle to stay under the 93 days rule, though he would miss the play-offs should Leeds qualify.

Robinson was delighted to be reunited with Liverpool-born Trundle who has started the last four games.

Birkenhead-born Robinson said: “Lee was my best man and I would love him to stay. He is the kind of player who entertains the fans. He has proved he can score goals at this level. He scored loads of times for Swansea City and I know he wants to stay here because I have spoken to him many times about it.”

Robinson added: “Since the loan players came in, performances have improved for everyone to see. Richard Naylor, for instance, is the ideal package. We needed a leader in the back four – someone to bully people, put them in their place and tell them where to be.

"Richard is a natural leader and a Leeds United supporter since he was a lad. He wants to do his best for the club, so I am delighted that he has now been signed on a permanent deal.”
