Eccleshill 2 Grimsby Borough 1
The Eagles are flying again after banking their first points of the season at the second attempt.
Eccleshill suffered a 4-2 defeat on the road as their Kool Sport Northern Counties East League Division One season got underway the previous week but in their first home game they ensured they did not fall to the curse of playing against ten men.
A direct free-kick from Scott Price put the home side in front and they doubled their advantage when Joe Spivak scored.
The young American pounced to head home after a Matthew Moore effort had come back off the crossbar.
Grimsby reduced the arrears through Luke Mascall, who had been a thorn in the Eagles’ side all afternoon, but had Rob Greentham red-carded for foul and abusive language.
Spokesman Brian Bell said: “We were drawing 2-2 with Pontefract when they had a man sent off and we went on to lose.
“I began to wonder when Grimsby had their man sent off – I just thought lightning might strike twice.”
