THE Eagles finally took off and flew home with the first point of Gerard Jones' reign at Eccleshill United thanks to last Saturday's 1-1 draw.

It was a long overdue result after a run of five straight defeats since the new head coach took charge.

Eccleshill deserved something from four of those five games but their luck was out. Now that sequence is over, the only thing significant about the point earned at Winterton Rangers is that it will be the first of many.

Jones said: "I was pleased with a point but I'd have been happier with a win because that was our best performance so far. We have played well most of the time but I thought we dominated that game.

"They had possession but we dealt with it well, got to half-time and came out all guns blazing. We had a game plan and we stuck to it and got our goal. Then we let ourselves down by not concentrating.

"It was the same old story – we took our foot off the gas and they controlled the next five or ten minutes and that's when they got the equaliser. But we pushed on after that and we got back on top.

"We must have created ten to 15 really good chances and our forwards – Marcus Edwards and Charlie Flaherty – played really well. Their manager said he was happy with a draw.

"But the point has got us off the mark and the lads are buzzing. We're all very excited and looking forward to the next game now."

Unfortunately that will not be this weekend or midweek as the fixture list has not been kind, leaving Jones' men without a scheduled game until they travel to Selby Town next Saturday.
