CHRIS Woakes is back in the England side for the second Investec Test against the West Indies at Headingley.

Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes returns from a side strain picked up during the Champions Trophy, with Middlesex seamer Toby Roland-Jones making way.

England go into the Leeds contest 1-0 up in the series after a comprehensive victory by an innings and 209 runs in the country's first day-night Test at Edgbaston last week.

"Chris is back in, Toby unfortunately misses out," said captain Joe Root.

"He's not done a lot wrong. He took his opportunity, he played some fantastic cricket and I see him playing a massive part for us moving forward. But it's a great chance for Chris now to come back into the side and show his class like he did last year."

Woakes established himself as a key component of the Test side last year, finishing 2016 with 41 wickets at 25.41 apiece.

Yet the 28-year-old will need to hit the ground running to guarantee a starting spot in this winter's Ashes series after Roland-Jones took 14 wickets in his first three international games, including a five-wicket haul against South Africa on debut.

While England's victory inside three days in the first Test suggested a sizeable gulf in class between the sides, Root believes his men can expect a thorough examination in his first Test as captain on his home ground.

The Yorkshire batsman said: "Any Test match is always difficult starting out.

"We know they're a side that are capable of some strong performances and we expect them to come back hard.

"We have got to make sure that our game is the best it can be and we follow up what was a really good win last week.

"The way we played in the last game, and the two games previously as well, we played some really strong cricket.

"To try and make sure that we leave this week having won the series is really important for us as a side."
