Play was possible in some Solly Sports Central Yorkshire League Premier and First Division games but there was little joy for the district's representatives as Birstall mustered only 151-7 chasing New Farnley's 189-8 and Batley went down by two wickets at home to Northowram.

New Farnley's win took them into second place, behind Wrenthorpe, while Northowram moved into a respectable mid-table position by virtue of victory with one over to spare.

Prolific Bradford League batsman Mark Gilliver failed to impress in the Northowram innings but he took 3-57 in a 15-over bowling stint and, with Chris Thompson (3-33), took the all-important wickets of Batley openers Mustafa Bhatti (50) and Farwad Maqsood (62) after a 110 first-wicket partnership.

In the First Division, Buttershaw St Paul's were crushed by second-placed Moorlands at St Paul's Road when the visitors posted an impressive 207-9, despite three wickets apiece from Paul Robinson, James Sawyer and Chis Kellett.

Chris Stott (42) top-scored for Moorlands, and then Andy Walker, with 3-40 off 15 overs, helped bowl out Buttershaw for just 122 in reply.

Ossett top this division, heading for an early return to the top flight after their 83-run win over Liversedge.

Robert Wade (71no) and Michael Edwards (56) put on 118 for the first Ossett wicket and Liversedge never got back in the game as Khalid Bilal (3-15) and Shoaib Latif (3-48) helped secure victory with 9.1 overs to spare.

Key games this week in the First Division are at Methley A, where Ossett should continue their winning run, Buttershaw St Paul#s are at Oulton, while Liversedge take on Scholes in a derby at Roberttown Lane, with both sides still looking to kick start their season.

In the Premier Division, Birstall and Mirfield Parish can expect a rough ride at home to Townville and Methley respectively, but Northowram will be hoping to build on last week's success when they entertain Carlton.

* The Central Yorkshire League have notified clubs that David Clegg (07752-364-912) has been appointed as match representative in respect of Jack Hampshire and Wheatley Cup fixtures and can be contacted in the event of weather-affected games.

They have decided that no fixed date will be given for the rescheduling of games and clubs are permitted, with mutual agreement, to rearrange ties before the next round on July 29.

If agreement cannot be reached, the match-day representative is to be contacted for a final decision.

The management would allow a shortened format of the game to take place in midweek as an alternative to a bowl-out.
