Anthony McGrath column

This week we’re off to Colwyn Bay for our Championship game with Glamorgan.

I’m really looking forward to it, to be honest, because I’ve not played there for a while and some of the lads haven’t visited the ground as we were last there in 2004.

It’s also another important game for us as it’s the last four-day match before Twenty20 starts.

In terms of our drawn Championship match against Northants, it was another fixture lost to the weather really. I think if it had gone four days, we probably would have got a result.

If we had won, we would have closed the gap on Derbyshire at the top. We’ll have to see if it has an impact later on in the season. All we can do is control the controllables really.

I think we were on top for every session we played. Maybe we should have bowled them out for a little bit less in their first innings but we managed to get 400 in our first innings and full batting points.

If we’d been allowed to have the full quota of overs, we would have bowled them out and probably chased down the total to win the game.

We have to take the positives. I think we’re playing well in the Championship right now and have got a bit of momentum, which is always very important. We’ve just got to keep it going. This week’s game, as I said with it being the last before the Twenty20s, is very important.

One thing that did impress me at Headingley was Mitchell Starc’s performance on his Championship debut.

I don’t think he’s played the longest form of the game for a while now. He’s played a bit of Test cricket but he’s played a lot of white ball stuff. It’s taken him a bit of time to get used to it again. I think he showed what he’s capable of.

On a personal note, I got another decent score with the bat. Hopefully I can get another and contribute to a win against Glamorgan, starting on Wednesday.
