Andrew Gale and Jonny Bairstow shared an entertaining fourth-wicket stand of 160 to help Yorkshire recover against Leicestershire during the opening day of their County Championship match at Scarborough.
With the hosts having been reduced to 33-3 during the morning session following Ramnaresh Sarwan’s decision to bowl first, Gale and Bairstow survived a dropped catch apiece to help their side reach tea at 207-4 after 64 overs.
Gale was the only wicket to fall in the afternoon when he was caught behind by Ned Eckersley off Wayne White as he chased a wide one, falling for 80 off 133 balls, including ten fours.
The left-handed skipper played fluently, especially through the off-side.
Bairstow hit two sixes just forward of square-leg and over long-leg and had reached the day’s second interval on 80 not out. Gary Ballance was beginning the evening session on eight.
