Director of cricket David Byas accepts it will be impossible for Yorkshire to replace Darren Lehmann.

The Australian ended his final season in county cricket with a magnificent triple-century against Durham last week to effectively secure his side's Division One status in the Championship.

Lehmann's innings of 339, the highest of a glittering career, took his first-class run tally for Yorkshire to 8,871 at a staggering average of almost 69.

But at the age of 36, Lehmann admits his body is no longer able to cope with the rigours of an English domestic season.

"I don't think we'll ever see a better cricketer," said Byas, a man who is hardly renowned for his liberal use of superlatives. "He's phenomenal; simply phenomenal."

Praise indeed, especially considering the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Richie Richardson preceded Lehmann as Yorkshire's overseas player.

"What Darren has done for this club is amazing, both on the field and off the field," said Byas.

"Some of his innings for this club, and this season in particular, have been immense.

"He's been a huge player to have in my side, a huge player to play with and a huge friend to me over the years."

Byas has played alongside, captained and coached the prolific South Australian.

"I've enjoyed watching him - all the players have enjoyed watching him and so has everyone else who has ever seen him play," said Byas.

"The contribution he has made to Yorkshire cricket has been massive. Whatever I say about him is not a big enough tribute.

"But all good things must come to an end and Darren won't be with us any more after this season. It will be an enormous hole to fill."
