I just hope that if England pick Jonny Bairstow, he gets some game time because we’ve already seen with Adil Rashid that not playing has hampered his development somewhat.

He’s been away with England on a couple of winter tours but, in hindsight, he’d have been better going away with the Lions and just bowling and bowling.

It would be a shame if that happened to Jonny. He needs to be playing rather than carrying the drinks and netting.

Naturally, if a young player scores runs consistently, like Jonny has, they’re going to be quite rightly looked at by England.

He’s having a really good summer and he’s doing exactly the right thing by mounting up the runs. Having been close to scoring hundreds in the last few years, he’s got that monkey off his back and done it consistently since.

Whether he gets his chance in the one-day series against India towards the end of the summer or in the winter, you just don’t know. That is something that’s out of his hands, so all he can do is perform.

Now that England are top of the rankings, they won’t be taking this winter lightly even though they don’t play an Australia or a South Africa. There will be extra pressure on England to nail that down.

Maybe the one-day series is the time for him to come in because England haven’t found their form consistently in that yet.

On a personal note, it’s been really pleasing to get a couple of scores over the last week or so. I’ve had a frustrating summer but hopefully I can make up for lost time and finish the season strongly.

With regards to the shift in the batting order in the Championship, which has seen me move down to number four, I’ve said to Galey and Martyn that I’m happy to do whatever job they want me to because I’m happy to be back playing and injury free.

I don’t think there’s a big difference in batting at three or four. I’ve done it before, most notably when Michael Vaughan came back after stepping down as England captain.

You can still be batting against the new ball at four, so it’s not something that I’ve given too much thought to.

The Sussex match at Scarborough on Wednesday is perhaps a bigger game than we first thought with both Hampshire and Worcester winning their most recent matches.

But we seem to be getting that consistency back in our batting unit, and we know that we can beat them if we play our best cricket.
