After six dispiriting, straight defeats in the league, Rawdon finally clinched their first victory of the Aire-Wharfe League season, knocking top-of-the-table Thackley out of the Waddilove Cup yesterday.

With top-scorers Joe Ollerenshaw and Nasser Jamal both out in the forties, Thackley were only able to muster 187-6, and Rawdon’s skipper Andrew Doidge (69) and former Yorkshire player Jeremy Batty (53) led the successful run chase.

Second Division Calverley also notched their first win of the season, beating First Division Kirkstall in a thrilling finish with just five balls remaining.

Kirkstall set a whopping 264-6 in their 45 overs but the close-to-six-an-over target didn’t faze the home side, with Shabir Bashir (79no) leading the way.

He was joined by Ben Waller when the sixth wicket fell and his new partner proceeded to smash 67 off 37 balls to clinch victory.

Addingham also overcame a side from a higher division, Henry Barrow top-scoring with 38 as they set Menston a target of 210-9 which the visitors never looked like reaching.

Mark Beckett (86) and Jordan Mackenzie (52) helped Harden to 225-8 but a sparkling, unbeaten century from Davin Charleston clinched a four-wicket win for Green Lane.

There was also a century from Shane McNamara as Steeton overcame Olicanian by 101 runs, while Dean Russ hit 97 not out for Guiseley but finished on the losing side, Otley going through by three wickets.

Steve Wilson scored 60 in Bolton Villas’ 176 but it wasn’t enough to halt holders Burley, with Ryan Cooper (48) and Nick Brook (69no) booking their place in the second round.

There they will meet Hall Park, who overcame Woodhouse largely due to a fine 91 from Sam Dobson but Ben Rhydding’s hopes of a cup run came to an end at Pool.
