All-rounder Rich Pyrah has returned home from Yorkshire’s pre-season tour of Barbados with a shoulder injury following a freak accident in the nets.

The 28-year-old was hit on his right shoulder by a ball which rebounded off the frame of the nets after being hit by one of his team-mates.

Pyrah will not bowl or throw in training back at Headingley over the next week but expects to be available for the LV= County Championship opener at Worcestershire on April 8.

“It was a bit of a freak injury really,” he confirmed. “I was walking out of a net when somebody hit a ball which hit the roof of the net and ricocheted onto my shoulder. It’s been quite painful and it’s my bowling and throwing shoulder.

“I’ve struggled, but I’ll hopefully be ready to bowl after a week’s rest.

“On the positive side, it’s given me a chance to work on my batting. That’s coming along really nicely.”

In the absence of Andrew Gale, Pyrah shared the captaincy duties with Gerard Brophy on tour.

Yorkshire won one and lost two of their three matches against county opposition.

“It’s been a great trip,” added Pyrah. “We’ve got a young squad here, so it was good to get them some match experience.

“Joe Root seems to have come on well over the winter months. I know he struggled a bit last year, but he has come here, scored runs and looked like he’s in good nick.

“But all the young lads have done well. It’s a bright future for the club.”
