Yeadon's second-team captain Andy Pickering is refusing to talk to his players about Sunday’s Sovereign Health Care Priestley Shield final against Baildon at Keighley.

That’s because his side face a crucial league fixture at Cleckheaton tomorrow which could go a long way to determining whether they stay in Division One next season.

Pickering said: “It is a massive game and one we need to focus on.

“Despite reaching the Shield final and the semi-finals of the Crowther Cup, we have struggled to win games in the league.

“I am not sure quite why that is, but we are only 18 points above Cleckheaton, who occupy the third relegation place, and we need to win.”

Once the Cleckheaton game is over Pickering will then get his players to focus on the challenge of facing table-topping Baildon.

Pickering is one of four survivors from the Yeadon team which won the trophy in 2005 – Nick Darfield, Jon Carey and Richard Machell are the others – and he would love to win the trophy again.

“It was great when we won it before, but this will be a test because Baildon are a good side.

“In paceman Brett Kinsey and spinner Jamie Abbott, they have two of the best bowlers in the league and we will have to counter them if we are to win again.”
