Gerard Brophy reminded the Yorkshire selectors of his capabilities with a career-best score in one-day cricket to help the Tykes secure a third successive Clydesdale Bank 40 victory today.

Overlooked for the County Championship side in favour of Jonathan Bair-stow, the South African wicketkeeper plundered 12 boundaries on his way to 93 not out to see Yorkshire record an emphatic 100-run win over the Derbyshire Falcons.

“I am delighted,” admitted Brophy, whose knock easily surpassed his previous best of 68 set last year.

“It has been frustrating this season with the side wanting to give Jonny (Bairstow) a go, so to finally get some time in the middle was great.”

His innings was all the more impressive given the fact he had only faced six balls in first-class cricket this season before the game.

From the moment he came to the crease though, with the Tykes in trouble on 88 for three in the 20th over, he had the measure of the Derbyshire attack.

Initially with Bradford-born Anthony McGrath, who made 40, but then also with another Bradfordian, Adil Rashid (22 not out), the 34-year-old played expansively to help add 153 runs for the fourth and fifth wickets in just 125 balls.

It made sure Yorkshire recovered from their shaky start to set the visitors a target of 242 at more than six an over.

That never looked likely though as Steven Patterson took centre stage with six wickets as the Tykes cruised home.

Two overs in particular proved pivotal as York-shire’s unbeaten start to 2010 was increased to eight games.

First, Ben Sanderson removed both Chris Rogers, who had made a fluid 37, and Greg Smith for a duck in the 12th over to reduce them to 57 for three.

Then Patterson took three wickets in the 30th over to effectively end the game as a contest, removing John Sadler (37), Lee Goddard (3) and Jake Needham (1) to leave the Falcons floundering on 131 for eight. He still had time to finish Derby-shire off in his next over as well – recording remarkable figures of five for five from 1.5 overs in his second spell – to finish with a career-best six for 32.

“I doubt I will ever bowl a more productive spell,” admitted a shocked Patterson at the close, the player also taking seven wickets in the LV=Championship win over Essex earlier in the week.

His terrific effort meant the visitors were eventually bowled out for 141 with more than eight overs left to play.

The latest win in what is becoming an excellent season, puts Yorkshire further clear at the top of Group B in the 40-over competition.

Most of the squad will now have a couple of days off, with the Tykes announcing a young squad to take on Loughborough University in a three-day game starting tomorrow.
