Baildon have made a struggling start in their defence of the Bradford League First Division title.

Woodlands inflicted a second successive defeat on them to move into second place, albeit 22 points behind early pacesetters Pudsey St Lawrence.

Overseas pace bowler Safraz Ahmed took five for 27 and left-arm spinner Chris Brice four for 48 as Woodlands dismissed Baildon for 165 to seal a 19-run win.

Woodlands lost wickets at regular intervals as they were bowled out for 184, with Andy Walker taking four for 48 and slow left-armer Mushtaq Ahmed three for 28.

Baildon made a bad start, losing their first four wickets for 27. Adil Islam (59) and Simon Webb (41) led a middle-order recovery but they lost their last four wickets for 29 runs and were all out for 165.

There was a glut of runs at Gomersal, where visitors Pudsey Congs amassed a massive 339 for four, with Andy Siddall (127no) and Mark Gill (100) both scoring centuries.

Siddall hit four sixes and 17 fours and Gill five sixes and 11 fours during a third-wicket stand of 173 while Andrew Bairstow made 50 not out off only 25 balls in the later overs.

Gomersal never challenged Congs’ formidable total, but gained maximum batting points as they replied with 241 for nine thanks to 17-year-old Andy Garrod, with 80, and Greg Pickles, 49.

Newly promoted Undercliffe registered their second win in a row with a 20-run home victory over Bradford & Bingley.

New signing, former Yorkshire and Nottingham-shire batsman Ashley Metcalfe, revived Undercliffe with 54 before a late onslaught from Luke Holroyd lifted them to what proved to be a winning 195 for seven. The young wicket keeper hit five sixes as he smashed a crucial 59 from 29 balls.

Kurtis Whippey and Harry Painter made the early breakthrough as Bingley slid to 61 for six. David Clow – last out for 35 – and overseas player Naveed Gharni (32) led a revival but it wasn’t enough as they were all out for 175.

Shabbir Rashid scored 101 not out as Farsley gained their second win of the season with a seven-wicket victory against Yeadon.

Rashid hit a six and 17 fours as Farsley overtook Yeadon’s score of 195 with 10.2 overs to spare and received good support from Yorkshire second-team opener James Lee (52).

Highlight of the Yeadon total was an innings of 52 from their new overseas player Tharanga De Silva.

Cleckheaton gained their second win when they beat next to the bottom Saltaire by five wickets.

The visitors lost two wickets in Ian Wardlaw’s first over and never fully recovered. Tim Jackson (42) and Waleed Akhtar (39) staged a partial recovery but Saltaire were bowled out for 120 as Wardlaw and Ammer Mahmood each took four wickets.

Cleckheaton also lost early wickets but won comfortably, led by Ian Nicholson (50) and Edward Walmsley (32no).
