Teenager Andy Gorrod helped Gomersal to a surprise win over Bradford League champions Baildon in the first round of the Heavy Woollen Cup to complete an amazing 48 hours.

The birthday boy, who was 17 on Friday, celebrated in style with a maiden Bradford League century at home to Saltaire the following day.

He then followed up by producing what was probably the performance of the day in the Heavy Woollen Cup to steer his side to a four-wicket win.

Baildon set a stiff target, with Ian Philliskirk (54) and Harry Smallwood (72) helping them to 265 all out.

But Gorrod, playing with an assurance beyond his years, guided his side to 258 for five before falling lbw to the wily Mushtaq Ahmed for 101 with three overs remaining.

Acting skipper Rob Burton subsequently took a six off Ahmed to settle the issue with seven balls to spare and set up a second-round trip to Huddersfield League side Shepley.

In the South Bradford derby clash, former Central League sides Buttershaw St Pauls and Jer Lane met at Wibsey.

It saw Central Yorkshire League outfit St Paul’s beat the Halifax Leaguers by nine wickets, with Paul Carroll 127 not out in their 221 for one.

Woodlands were eight-wicket winners at Spen Victoria thanks to half-centuries from Sam Frankland and Danny Shuffe.

Yeadon beat visiting Liversedge by the same margin, Birstall saw off Slaithwaite by 127 runs and Hanging Heaton were six-wicket winners at Townville.
