Martyn Moxon has hailed Yorkshire’s ability to perform under pressure after watching his side win their first two County Championship matches of the season.

A youthful White Rose outfit has stunned the bookies, who had them down as relegation fodder, and pleasantly surprised the club’s members and supporters by disposing of Warwickshire and Somer-set to proudly sit at the top of the LV= Division One table.

But, on both occasions, they have faced tricky final-day chases with the bat, coming through them with flying colours.

The likes of captain Andrew Gale, Adam Lyth, Jonny Bairstow and Oliver Hannon-Dalby have made major contributions to both victories, answering the critics who questioned whether they could step up to the mark in their new roles.

“The pleasing thing for me is the way we’ve played in the two victories. Both times we have batted last under pressure and managed to get the runs – 291 and 198 under pressure is a good sign,” said director of professional cricket Moxon.

“I think it’s even more important with this young side to have such a good start because it really breeds confidence.

“We have played attacking cricket like we said we would, but it’s easier to do that when we’re as confident as we are.”

There is no surprise that Jacques Rudolph tops the runs scored list with 204, but Gale is right behind him on 188, having notched the county’s first century of the summer against Somerset.

Moxon continued: “Galey has played really well, and it’s been a great start for himself and the team. Andrew asked for everybody to be positive in the way they play, and the boys have risen to that challenge.”

Yorkshire, who travel down to Canterbury tomorrow ahead of Wednesday's clash with newly-promoted Kent, have England duo Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad available for the final time before linking up with the national side for the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.

It is a huge boost for Moxon and Gale, not least because overseas signing Tino Best’s arrival from Barbados has been delayed due to the volcanic ash in Iceland.

Moxon added: “Having Bresnan and Shahzad gives us some time to sort out the Tino situation, and it means there is less pressure on some of our youngsters.”
