HARRY Brook is definitely one to watch. I know this is a big thing to say but I haven't seen a young batsman as destructive and as good as him since I've been at Yorkshire.

He's a fairly positive player. If it's there, he'll hit it. He's nice on the eye, his attitude's good, his temperament's good, he has a lot of self-confidence and knows he's good enough to be playing first-team cricket.

For him to play his first Championship match at Lord's is something pretty special. He's just finished school. This has come two or three weeks after. It's a pretty amazing leaving present.

To be around the likes of Pete Handscomb and Gary Ballance and bat in that middle order with them, he'll relish the challenge.

He's scored runs in all forms recently. He's played a lot of white ball for the under-19s, the second XI and the Academy and has done brilliantly.

We knew he'd get there with the red ball but he just struggled until the last few weeks. He just hadn't had the number of games. He was still at school and had faced a lot of average bowling with the red ball.

He got into the seconds early last year against the red ball and didn't do as well as he wanted and knew that. But he's worked hard and has got three or four tons in the last few weeks.

When you come through the ranks as a batsman at Yorkshire, you will always get compared to Joe Root. It's only natural, I guess – but he wants to be his own player.

He knows how good Rooty is but he doesn't copy him or try to be him. He has got that self-confidence, determination and fight to try and get ahead of some of our batsmen.

I know after the first few games, he won't be just looking at scoring runs for Yorkshire. He has that mentality to go all the way. Watch this space.

Off the field, he's like me in a way. He can't get enough of cricket. He loves going back to his old club at Burley. I think his uncle still plays there.

I roomed with him in India on the 19s tour this winter. We asked to room together, given we're both Yorkshiremen.

He just bounces around and loves his music, you know the sort – Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, One Direction. Again, a bit like me really!

I'm sure he will be reading this column. So now I've bigged him up, I'll tell him again: Harry, you're not invincible, but play the way you play and good luck, mate.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him get a long run this season.

Lord's is famed for its hospitality, especially their lunches. I must admit it was a close call as to whether myself and Jack Leaning would stay for lunch or get the train back to York early and beat the traffic on Monday. The latter choice just won.

I kind of feel that until I play there, I don't really want the full Lord's experience. The dream scenario, I reckon, would be to play your first game for England at Lord's and not have played there before. I think that would be pretty special.

It was important for me to get back home and play in our ongoing three-day second XI game against Derbyshire at York because I need some wickets to help press for a first-team place.

At the minute, the other lads deserve to be ahead of me because they've done it for five to ten years – the likes of Steve Patterson, Ryan Sidebottom and Jack Brooks. Ben Coad has also come in and done well.

When Andrew Gale tells me I'm not playing, I do get frustrated, but I know I shouldn't really be in on merit. Once I have got some wickets in the seconds, I can be asking questions.

Next week sees our Championship match against Surrey at Headingley played under lights with the pink ball. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

I went to the Australia v South Africa pink-ball Test in Adelaide over the winter when I was there, which was a brilliant spectacle.

I'm not sure it has any room in county cricket but I understand they're trying to get people ready for the Test match in August.

I don't think you'll get the extra public support in county cricket just for having it after work. You might get 200 or 300 – but not 2,000 or 3,000.

In Australia, they have the weather for it. In the middle of our summer, we could maybe have a Test, something a bit different. I could see that working well.

In terms of our game against Surrey, we'll have a strong team with Rooty and Jonny Bairstow back. With our bowling attack at the minute, it's the best in the country. Get our batting right and we'll be unstoppable.
