Yorkshire won the toss in their final County Championship game of the season and by lunch on the first day against Surrey had progressed to 81-2 off 30 overs.

Having selected a side featuring eight batsmen at The Oval, coach Jason Gillespie and skipper Andrew Gale saw Adam Lyth and Alex Lees put on 22 for the first wicket.

Lees, on eight, was then caught by wicketkeeper Steven Davies when driving at Matt Dunn, the ball being parried to him by third slip Gary Wilson.

Lyth and Phil Jaques had added a further 36 runs in 15 overs when Lyth was taken down the leg side by Davies off the persevering Dunn for 24, an innings which had included four boundaries.

But Jaques displayed a tight technique and was unbeaten on 34 when the players came in for lunch.

At the other end Kane Williamson was three not out on the day when he had been confirmed as Yorkshire’s overseas player for the 2014 season.

Surrey skipper Gareth Batty bowled three overs of off-spin from the Vauxhall End prior to the break and had three loud appeals turned down.
