Yorkshire recovered from the loss of Phil Jaques' wicket and were 71-1 in reply to Sussex's 292 at lunch on the second day of the LV= County Championship match at Hove.
Jaques was lbw to a full length ball from Steve Magoffin after impressing in his brief innings of 21, but Adam Lyth and Kane Williamson guided their side to a secure position at the first interval.
Lyth was unbeaten on 31 and Williamson was 17 not out. Both had played with growing confidence and Andrew Gale's batsmen will now be looking to build a sizeable first-innings lead on what looks to be a fairly flat pitch.
Earlier Ryan Sidebottom had trapped Sussex No 11 Lewis Hatchett lbw to 21 to end the home side's first innings. The left-arm seamer finished with 4-50.
