Phil Jaques underpinned a profitable start to Yorkshire’s second innings having been asked to follow on by passing 50 for the fourth time this season.
The left-handed Australian, opening the batting at Scarborough this week, united with New Zealander Kane Williamson to decrease the chances of a damaging LV= County Championship defeat against Durham during the third afternoon.
Yorkshire started their second innings 299 runs behind after lunch and lost Adam Lyth lbw to Ben Stokes in the sixth over.
But Jaques and Williamson shared a stand of 104 inside 28 overs for the second wicket to take the score to 123-1 from 33 overs, leaving Yorkshire still trailing by 176.
Jaques did not progress in total comfort. He top-edged Stokes for six over long-leg before surviving a huge lbw shout on 28 from the same bowler.
He later top-edged Stokes straight over wicketkeeper Phil Mustard’s head on the way to 66 not out, while Williamson added 36 not out to his first-innings 84.
