Mark Robertshaw is determined to see his Pudsey St Lawrence side take the JCT600 Bradford League Division One title race to the wire.

The Saints skipper accepts that Cleckheaton remain big favourites to get their hands on a first-ever crown with a 16-point lead and two games left.

But the Moorenders’ surprise 91-run defeat at Bradford & Bingley has given a glimmer of hope to second-placed St Lawrence and also Woodlands, whom they host at Tofts Road on Saturday.

Cleckheaton can bounce back at home to already-relegated Saltaire on Saturday but victory for Pudsey would at least take the title race down to the final day.

Robertshaw said: “We have a tough game against Woodlands but if we can beat them and take it to the last game, at least we have still have a chance.

“Last year went down to the wire and the title race was on a knife edge.

“It looked like Lightcliffe were going to take the title from Woodlands at one stage.

“It would be good to have a chance of at least putting Cleckheaton under some pressure.”

Woodlands, who trail the leaders by 23 points, still have an outside chance of retaining their crown and face Cleckheaton in the final game. But St Lawrence – who last won the league in 1991 – have the best hope.

Robertshaw, whose team go to Lightcliffe on the final day, is delighted with his side’s efforts this season.

He said: “We’ve had an odd blip but no real bad run of form.

“The batsmen have provided a good foundation, Craig Wiseman has opened the bowling really well and Jordan Thompson has been a real bonus as an extra bowler. He is with the Yorkshire Academy and been involved with England under-17s, and is definitely one to look out for.”

Robertshaw has hit form himself, having reached 1,000 league runs for the season last week.

He said: “I did it three years ago in the last game, so now I want to push on in the final two matches and improve on that.”
