It was a bitter sweet day for Yorkshire’s 600-wicket star Ryan Sidebottom at Scarborough today as Durham pressed ahead during day one of the table-topping LV= County Championship match.

Left-arm swing bowler Sidebottom, aged 35, took three wickets, including his 600th in first-class cricket when he had Mark Stoneman caught behind as he played loosely outside off-stump midway through the afternoon.

But, unfortunately for Sidebottom, the left-handed opener had already scored 122 to help underpin a close of play score of 406-6 from 96 overs, which also included 127 for Ben Stokes and 74 not out for captain Paul Collingwood.

This all came after Sidebottom had given Yorkshire a flying start to the match with two wickets in three balls in the third over to leave Durham at 5-2 in front of a 5,500 crowd.

Sidebottom was watched by his father Arnie, who claimed 596 first-class wickets in his career, and Ryan said: “My dad was here with the family. He came down to watch and had a few whiskey and lemonades.

“I’m delighted to go past him - to get 600 has been a decent career. I’d like to carry on and get a few more.

“It doesn’t seem two minutes since I was down here watching him bowling. It’s gone pretty quick. Following in his footsteps is something I’ve always wanted to do, so to go past him, I’m really pleased. It’s a great family effort.”

Sidebottom won lbw appeals against Keaton Jennings and Scott Borth-wick, who fell for ducks after the visitors won the toss.

But, after a stunning one-handed catch from Kane Williamson at third slip to help Jack Brooks get rid of Will Smith later in the morning session, Stoneman and Stokes shared 128 in 28 overs for the fourth wicket.

Stoneman became number 600 for Sidebottom, but it was brief respite for Yorkshire as Stokes and Collingwood shared 120 in 28 for the fifth wicket and Collingwood and Phil Mustard (42) 88 in 20 for the sixth.

Adil Rashid had Stokes caught behind off a top-edged sweep before Williamson had Mustard trapped lbw reverse sweeping late in a disappointing day for the hosts.

“As a unit we bowled poorly. It was not like us, but you are going to have bad days,” added Sidebottom.

Meanwhile, Adam Lyth has signed a new contract until December 2015.
