Gary Ballance’s stunning catch against Leicestershire on Tuesday could prove to be the defining moment in Yorkshire’s Friends Life t20 campaign.

The one-handed effort to dismiss Josh Cobb, running towards the long-off fence off Jack Brooks, was a game changer according to Vikings coach Jason Gillespie, whose side travel to Durham tomorrow night.

And if the White Rose county can win their next two matches – they also face Derbyshire at Chesterfield on Sunday – Yorkshire may look back on it as the spark for an imperative winning run.

Gillespie said: “Everyone who was watching could see what that catch did for us. The whole dugout was up on their feet.

“It was funny because as soon as the ball went in the air, Paul Farbrace said ‘Gary’s going to catch that’. We’re all wondering whether it was going to go for six or not but he made those yards really quickly.

“We stress that in our fielding, the anticipation is key, and trying to save singles and save boundaries. Taking a one-in-a-hundred catch like that does turn games around.

“The lads practise really hard on their skills, so it’s really pleasing to see that someone can have a moment like that. It was on TV as well, which everyone was happy about!”

Despite defeats against Durham and Derby and a tie in their first three matches to undermine their chances of reaching the quarter-finals, Gillespie believes his troops are not far away from top form in this format.

“We haven’t been shattered by our performances and if you look at the first three games, even though our batting was a little below par we took each game to the last over,” he said.

“It shows our bowling and fielding efforts have been top drawer.

“We knew we were not getting enough runs on the board and the batters have talked about it and are trying to improve.

“We’ve had the odd over, which can happen in T20, but against Leicestershire it was a really good team effort.

“We set out to win every game we play and hopefully it can be the start of a few wins on the trot.

“We play Durham and then Derbyshire and they are both going to be challenging games. But if we play as we know we can, I’m sure we can come away from them with wins.”
