Holders Pudsey Congs are safely through to the quarter-finals of the JCT600 Bradford League’s Twenty20 competition.

They despatched league newcomers New Farnley by 100 runs at the Barry Jackson Ground in the first round of the Dyson Energy Services-backed event.

Opener and skipper Gareth Phillips (43) and Eugene Burzler (40) both made sizeable contributions to Congs’ 185-7 after they won the toss, Callum Geldart (26) and Nick Lindley (21) chipping in as Joe Bedford (2-25) fared best for the hosts.

New Farnley were soon reduced to 13-5 as Richie Lamb (3-13) got among the wickets and there was no way back, despite a stand of 41 between Sam Hewitt (19) and Chris Blackburn (23).

Edward Walmsley took 3-14, Glenn Roberts 2-15 and Mushy Shah 2-25 as the home side were dismissed for 85.

Almost as emphatic was Hanging Heaton’s defeat of Gomersal at Oxford Road.

Joe Fraser’s unbeaten 72 off 42 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, was the rock around which Hanging Heaton’s 184-7 was built.

Opener David Stiff made 33 out of 38 and Gary Fellows matched his score as only James Russell, Nathan Dalton and Rob Ellis threatened to contain the visitors.

No-one in Gomersal’s reply scored above 20 and only four reached double figures as they were castled for 106, Jay Boulk taking three catches as James Stansfield (3-23), Michael Smith (2-7), old stager John Carruthers (2-12) and Boulk (2-23) got among the wickets.

The closest match of the night was at South View Road, where visitors Lightcliffe got home by seven wickets with five balls to spare against East Bierley.

Mark Gill (34) and Yasir Abbas (30) made decent contributions at either end of Bierley’s 144-7, Daanyaal Ahmed taking an impressive 2-12 while Suleman Khan (2-33) and Josh Wheatley (2-42) were more expensive.

David Hester (60), Alex Stead (30no) and Khan (24) starred with the bat for Lightcliffe as only Abbas and Waqas Maqsood looked like derailing them.

Quarter-final draw: Lightcliffe v Undercliffe, Pudsey Congs v Baildon, Pudsey St Lawrence v Morley, Hanging Heaton v Woodlands. Matches to be played Sunday, June 23 or Tuesday, June 25.
