Yorkshire overcame frequent stoppages for rain to make solid progress before tea on the first day of their County Championship clash with Middlesex at Lord’s.

Andrew Gale’s side were well placed on 116-2 when the players came in for an early interval, with Alex Lees on 42 not out and the skipper unbeaten on 26.

The man dismissed in the afternoon session was Phil Jaques, who made 20 and could do little about the ball from Gareth Berg which he edged to John Simpson three overs after lunch.

But Gale, fresh from his 272 against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough, joined Lees and the pair had added an unbroken 46 for the third wicket at tea.
