Chris Brice produced a fine all-round performance as defending JCT600 Bradford League champions Wood-lands extended their lead in Division One on the day bottom club Saltaire gained a surprise win at Hanging Heaton.

Opener Sam Frankland (55) and Simon Mason (52) scored half-centuries while Brice made 40 not out in Woodlands’ 213-7.

Overseas all-rounder Kashif Naveed (43), James McNichol (39) and Matthew Baxter (31) kept Morley in the hunt and they were well placed at 165-5. But their last five wickets fell for a mere 15 runs as Woodlands completed a 33-run win, with Brice taking 5-62 while overseas pace bowler Sarfraz Ahmed claimed 3-29.

This 19-point win takes Woodlands’ tally to 130 – 25 ahead of both Cleckheaton, who suffered a 21-run home defeat against Lightcliffe, and Pudsey St Lawrence, who thrashed Bradford & Bingley by ten wickets at Tofts Road. Pudsey Congs, who won at Baildon, are three points further back.

St Lawrence bowled out Bingley for 142, off-spinner Steve Watts their most successful bowler with 4-29 in 12.5 overs. Skipper Mark Robertshaw (73no) and Adam Waite (58no) then led St Lawrence home with 15.5 overs to spare.

Slow left-armer Glenn Roberts produced an outstanding performance as Congs beat Baildon by seven wickets at Jenny Lane, taking 5-22 in 13 overs as Baildon were dismissed for 154, of which with opener Kasir Maroof top-scored with 51.

Openers Nick Lindley (64no) and skipper Gareth Phillips (46) set Congs on their way with an opening stand of 71 and they completed their win with 12.5 overs left after an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 55 between Lindley and Andrew Bairstow (22).

The result leaves last season’s Division Two champions 11 points adrift at the bottom.

Fifth-placed Manningham Mills’ challenge faltered in a high-scoring home match against East Bierley, who had lost both their matches over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

Adam Patel top-scored with 89 as Mills posted a challenging 253-8. But Bierley were equal to the task, sealing their eight-wicket win with seven overs to spare.

Mark Gill (90no) and Gavin Hamilton (82) set them on their way with an opening stand of 132 and, after Tabbi Bhatti was dismissed cheaply, Gill and Andrew Rennison (58no) put the seal on their outstanding win with an unbroken third-wicket stand of 91.

The day’s outstanding result was Saltaire’s six-wicket win at Hanging Heaton, which owed much to an all-round contribution from Khuram Shahzad.

The overseas player took 4-41 following economical spells from opening bowlers Turseif Arshad and Awais Ejaz as Hanging Heaton were restricted to 180-9, of which James Stansfield top-scored with 70.

The visitors made a bad start, losing their first two wickets for 25, but recovered to win with 13.4 overs to spare as Shahzad made an unbeaten 82 in a result that lifts Saltaire 13 points clear of the bottom and two above the relegation places.

Division Two leaders Farsley maintained their unbeaten record after beating Idle by nine wickets.

But there was a surprise defeat for second-placed New Farnley at Brighouse by eight runs, the league’s new boys finishing on 172-9 in reply to Brighouse’s 180.
