Haworth-based William Whiteoak turned the tables on his Bingley St Ives clubmate Terry Brushwood to win the Bradford Amateur Strokeplay Championship.

With Bradford and Yorkshire junior titles already under his belt, the 18-year-old won his first senior crown following rounds of 75 and 70 at Woodhall Hills.

His three-over-par finish in wet and windy conditions was one better than Keighley’s Calum Hey (75, 71) and Brushwood, who was favourite at the halfway stage after a first-round 70 but followed up with a 76.

Both missed out on a play-off with Whiteoak after bogeying the last.

It meant Whiteoak gained revenge on his Bradford Union foursomes partner Brushwood for snatching the Bingley St Ives Scratch Cup from his grasp back in May.

The teenager said: “Terry and I play together for Bradford and there is a bit of rivalry between us.

“He beat me to the Scratch Cup when I had a four-shot lead with two holes to play, so it was nice to win this one. We spur each other on.”

Whiteoak, a former Yorkshire under-16 title winner, said he had hit the ball better in the morning but admitted some “stupid shots” had meant he was only among the chasing pack at the halfway stage.

But the former Oakbank School pupil launched an afternoon charge, with birdies at the third, fifth and sixth, leading him to an outward 33.

“I missed a five-footer on the eighth to go four under but then fell back again,” said Whiteoak, who was Bradford junior champion in 2010 and 2011.

A par putt was missed from 18 inches on ten, and further shots were dropped at 13 and 14.

But a birdie at 17 put him back in contention before a rescue act for par at the last proved crucial for a one-under-par 70.

He said: “I hit my tee shot on the 18th 60 yards to the right by the practice ground and had to lay up with my second shot but managed to get up and down.”

Whiteoak admitted he hadn’t expected to catch Brushwood but sensed things had not gone to plan with his clubmate, who was playing just in front of him. He said: “Terry is a steady player who doesn’t do much wrong but he didn’t look happy so I knew something must have happened.”

The former professional made five bogeys in his second round, while Keighley youngster Hey - a former Bradford junior team-mate of Whiteoak’s and a friend off the course - enjoyed an impressive level-par second-round 71 to claim runner-up on a countback.

Like Whiteoak, he came charging out of the blocks with birdies at the second, third and fifth but bogeys at the fourth, eighth, tenth and 18th dashed his hopes.

The new champion, who has also been a member at Branshaw since the age of ten, paid tribute to his grandparents Judith and Mike Narey, of Exley Head in Keighley, for their support in taking him to tournaments.

He said: “My parents work so I’m really grateful to them for helping me out.”
