New Liversedge boss Eric Gilchrist has turned his back on the higher rungs of the non-league ladder to come back to Clayborn.

More than a decade ago under Gilchrist, the Spen club prospered and were candidates for a move up to the UniBond League (now sponsored by Evo-Stik) themselves but promotion eluded them and the manger was tempted away as he sought to fulfil his ambitions.

Eleven years at Ossett Albion followed as Gilchrist proved himself on the higher step of the football pyramid.

A less successful and much shorter spell with Ossett Town was the last chapter before he came back to the club he never fell out of love with.

Gilchrist said: “I got a bit fed up of the UniBond League culture.

“It’s all money, money, money. I thought I fancied the challenge that Sedge offers and I applied for the vacant role. It made me feel old when I realised it is 12 years since I was here.

“If I have one regret about my last spell it is that I left under a bit of a cloud.

“When I quit it hurt me and the club when a lot of players left with me. I was a little disappointed about some of the comments from people who should have known better. But that is all in the past now and I’m looking to the future.

“It was 2000 when I left and a lot has happened since then, for me and for Sedge. I had some great years here before and I want to take the club back to where we were then.”
