Simon Mason hit a half-century against the side he helped to win the 2009 Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions' Trophy as Woodlands defeated York by 13 runs in a closely-fought first-round tie.

Ironically it was a patient 52 from Mason that enabled York to defeat Woodlands by four wickets in the 2009 final at East Bierley, and that was exactly the score he made as the JCT600 Bradford League champions took their revenge.

Mason was the only player on the Woodlands side to truly master a pitch on which application was needed.

Mason’s determined innings enabled Woodlands to make 175 in the face of a productive spell of 5-22 from Jake Murphy.

York looked the likely winners as Oliver Hairs stroked an impressive 50, but Woodlands held their nerve.

They will now be away to the winners of the first- round clash between Wrenthorpe and Honley on June 3.

York Senior League champions Woodhouse Grange set up a home semi-final against the winners of the all-South Yorkshire League tie between holders Whitley Hall and Elsecar after beating Thackley by 133 runs.

Mike Burdett hit an impressive 114 not out and shared in an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 138 with Tom Youngs, who struck an undefeated 53 in a 249-5 total. Nissar Jamal was the best of the Thackley bowlers with 2-29.

Aire-Wharfe League title holders Thackley, making their debut in the competition, were bowled out for 116 as Tom Quinn took 3-28 and Dave Suddaby 3-30.
