Salts missed a great chance to all-but seal runners-up spot in DIVISION ONE of the West Riding County Amateur League as they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Tingley Athletic.

With main rivals Overthorpe SC’s game at Wakefield City being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, the incentive was there for Salts to open up a six-point cushion.

But League Cup finalists Tingley had other ideas and Salts now need to take at least three points from their final two games – away to bottom side Halifax Irish or at home to fourth-placed Hunsworth – to guarantee second place.

Matt Newell gave Salts the lead against Tingley but it needed a late Kyle Berry equaliser to rescue a point after Andy Lockhart had doubled up in reply.

Hunsworth, who were relegated from the top flight last season, saw their late charge towards possibly snatching second place ended when they lost 2-1 at champions-elect Lepton Highlanders.

With Halifax Irish already relegated, Dudley Hill Rangers were dragged back into danger by a 2-1 defeat to second-bottom Storthes Hall Reserves.

Rangers had eased their fears with a midweek win over Bay Athletic Reserves but Storthes Hall are not going down without a fight and closed to within a point thanks to Levi Maturine and an own goal by Adam Sharkey. Bronte Wanderers ended their season with a 2-0 defeat at Ventus-Yeadon Celtic, with Matthew Hannan and Scott Creighton on target.

Ovenden West Riding moved to within three points of clinching the PREMIER DIVISION title with a 3-1 home victory over Kirkburton. Andy Gregory (2) and Steve Fullard outweighed Matt Tattersall’s late consolation.

Campion bounced back from a 6-2 midweek loss at Steeton with a 7-0 romp at Marsden as Damian Melvin and Ben O’Melia hat-tricks were added to by Andy Benjamin.

Bay Athletic, champions for the last four seasons, closed to within two points of second-placed Tyersal with a 2-0 home win over Hall Green United.

At the foot of the table, both Brighouse Town and Littletown lost to leave them still in trouble just ahead of bottom side Wibsey.

Littletown lost 1-0 to Alex Slack’s goal for Storthes Hall, while Brighouse had Joe Swallow and Dave Woofenden on the scoresheet but slumped 4-2 against Steeton as Lee Reilly (2), Damian Whiteoak and Matthew Kershaw responded.

In DIVISION TWO, Campion Reserves moved to within three points of leaders Albion Sports as a second-half Jordan Aird strike accounted for rock-bottom Golcar United Reserves 1-0.

Second-bottom West Horton, who play Campion on Wednesday night, beat Ovenden West Riding Reserves 4-0 as Ebad Rashid backed up Matthew Brennan’s hat-trick.

Salts Reserves ended their season with a 3-2 defeat at Lower Hopton Reserves but still finish second in DIVISION THREE behind Littletown Reserves.
