Guiseley manager Steve Kittrick has described Saturday’s FA Cup third-qualifying round tie at Northern League Ashington as a “banana skin”.

The Lions, who reached the first-round proper last season, have become a big fish in recent seasons and Kittrick said: “The Northern League would like nothing better than for one of their clubs to beat us.

“They even allowed Ashington to postpone their league match in midweek to give them a better chance.

“It is not unheard of for them to do that. They are a good league but it is maybe for financial reasons that some of their players don’t spread their wings.”

Ashington, birthplace of England World Cup winners Bobby and Jackie Charlton and 12th in STL Northern League Division One, drew 3-3 at home to Vauxhall Motors in the last round before winning the replay 1-0.

Guiseley spokesman Stuart Allen, who was at the replay with Kittrick, said: “They won 1-0 so obviously they have quality and have beaten a side from our division.

“We had a long journey last week when we went to Workington so the management and coaching staff are making sure the preparation is very similar.

“The last thing we need is to drop off the pace or take this game lightly. The attitude of the players has to be spot on if we are to get anything.”

Meanwhile, Guiseley have moved swiftly to replace Alex Davidson.

They have signed former Welsh under-21 international striker Kevin Gall, who ironically played against the Lions last Saturday for Workington Town.

Merthyr Tydfil-born Gall, who can also play on the wing, started his career at Newcastle United and has had spells at numerous league clubs.
