Colin Cooper has revealed his disappointment at being overlooked for the City job when Peter Jackson quit.
Cooper took the helm for two games as caretaker, overseeing the win over Barnet, before Phil Parkinson took command.
Cooper, who returned to Middlesbrough as youth-team coach, said: “When I wasn’t offered the job I was hugely disappointed. Of course I was.
“I thought we had done well enough to justify it. Then I had the conversation with the chairman but it wasn’t the conversation I wanted.
“I’m not chasing jobs. This is a business where you have to work hard to put yourself in a position where there may be an opportunity to move on.”
