Lightcliffe opener Chris Taylor goes into tomorrow’s JCT600 Bradford League Division Two match at Spen Victoria needing just 28 to complete 1,000 runs in a season for the fourth time.

But Taylor insists it’s success for his team rather than personal glory that is occupying his thoughts.

Lightcliffe look set to win promotion to Division One as they are currently second in the table, seven points behind Saltaire, who have a game in hand and visit Great Horton tomorrow.

Significantly, Lightcliffe are 48 points ahead of third-placed Keighley with five games to play.

While leaders Saltaire have won nine games in succession, Lightcliffe have stuttered in recent weeks, suffering defeats to Idle and Saltaire and tieing with Yeadon.

Taylor said: “While it is nice to be close to scoring 1,000 runs again, my main aim is not just to get promotion but to try and win the league for Lightcliffe.

“Saltaire are playing well, they have a game in hand and we need them to slip up somewhere.

“But it is important that we try and win all our remaining games to keep the pressure on them.”

Injuries and unavailabilities have hampered Light-cliffe’s promotion push.

Opening bowler Gary Severn has been out all season with a damaged elbow, batsman Matt Taylor suffered ankle ligament damage and will not play again this year, while top wicket-taker Evan Edwards has also missed matches with a hamstring problem.

Even Taylor himself has been playing with a hamstring tear, while Alex Stead is carrying a calf strain.

“Our resources were so stretched a few weeks ago that 59-year-old Roger Stead was our only fit seam bowler and we had to use our spinners Chris Greenwood and Josh Wheatley to support him,” said Taylor.

The recent problems have illustrated the need for Lightcliffe to strengthen their squad, particularly if they are playing in Division One next season.

“When I came to this club, I had a five-year plan to win the Division One title,” revealed Taylor.

“If we go up this year, then there are three seasons to realise that goal.

“It won’t be easy but we are aware of where we need to strengthen and will strive to do that.

“Some people will say it is not possible for a club like Lightcliffe to win the title but I wouldn’t have joined if I didn’t think it could be achieved.”

Woodlands, who are 33 points clear at the top of Division One, will be looking to take another step towards the league title when they entertain Mann-ingham Mills.

One of the best games of the day is at East Bierley where Pudsey Congs are the visitors.

Second-placed Cleckheaton, whose unbeaten run was ended by Bradford & Bingley last week, cannot afford to slip up as they visit Hanging Heaton.

Farsley batsman Lorenzo Ingram is another eyeing the 1,000 run target. He has 907 ahead of the clash with Undercliffe.

Time is running out for bottom two Baildon and Gom-ersal. Baildon are 44 points adrift of safety, while Gomersal are a further 17 points back with five games to go.

Tomorrow, Baildon host Bradford & Bingley, while Gomersal visit Tofts Road to take on inconsistent Pudsey St Lawrence.
