The jinx gripping Leeds United’s strikers has now struck Billy Paynter.

The former Swindon hit-man is suffering from tonsillitis, misses today’s pre-season friendly against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and could also be ruled out of a game at Norwegian Premier League club Sandesfjord on Tuesday (6pm BST).

With Davide Somma already out for between six and nine months and Luciano Becchio definitely missing the start of the season after minor hamstring surgery, manager Simon Grayson was considering pairing Paynter with Ross McCormack against Wednesday until the former dropped out through illness.

Robert Snodgrass, who can play up front, is doubtful for the Hillsborough game with an ankle injury which sidelined him against Rochdale on Tuesday night, but defender Patrick Kisnorbo and winger Lloyd Sam were back in training on Thursday and are expected to return against Gary Megson’s Wednesday.
