Two local semi-professional clubs have confirmed another pre-season fixture each – one coming about thanks to one of David Wetherall’s final decisions at Bradford City.

Non-League newcomers Albion Sports will be facing a Bradford City XI at Horsfall Stadium in a few weeks, while Brighouse Town have agreed a date with Bradford Park Avenue.

Albion manager Kulwinder Sandhu said: “I spoke to Peter Horne and David, who has obviously left Valley Parade now and we all wish him well in his new job, about a pre-season friendly and was delighted when they came back to me.

“We have to set a date but it will be just after Bradford City take on Avenue at Horsfall.”

Albion are sharing Bradford Council-owned Horsfall with Avenue for the coming season as they take their first step on the football pyramid.

Avenue host the Bantams on Friday, June 22, with a much younger City side expected to face Albion days later.

Sandhu said: “It’s a pity that the games are so close together because we might have had a lot more people coming through the gate otherwise.

“It might have been a good opportunity to make some money if the City fans had not just seen their side at Horsfall.

“As it is, it looks like it will just be a test for our players to play against young professionals and we thank Peter, and David, for making that possible.

“It is a feather in our cap to be playing a team from a Football League club.

“We also have another friendly to add because we are playing Wetherby away. That is Eugene Lacy’s (former Liversdege manager) club and he and I go back a long way, so that is another match that has come about because of long-standing friendship.”

New Brighouse boss Mick Couzens was more at home at Horsfall last season because he was in charge of Avenue’s reserve side.

His new home at the Dual Seal Stadium, having been made first-team manager at the Baris NCE League outfit during the summer, will be the venue for Avenue’s visit on Saturday, July 30.
