Leeds United’s players returned for pre-season training yesterday, with goalkeeper Paul Rachubka meeting his new team-mates for the first time.

Rachubka, who joined the club from Blackpool on a free transfer last week, is expected to herald an influx of new arrivals over the next few weeks, with the defence and midfield in need of strengthening.

Meanwhile, former Leeds and England defender Tony Dorigo is warning that his old club will face a harder task this season because the Championship is stronger.

He said: “There are a few bigger clubs coming down from the Premier League, including West Ham and Birmingham, who have some very good players.

"I would be concerned because two or three players have gone through the door at Leeds so far, with just one coming in.

“It will be a difficult season but the fans should show faith in the manager and wait to see who he brings in.

"Promotion is the aim but the fans have to be realistic. A few more players are required to help the club take the next step.”

Dorigo believes West Ham will pose a real threat, adding: “They have bought Kevin Nolan, who is a top player and scores goals from midfield.

"His signing is a big signal and they have a good blend of youth and experience. How many Leeds players have played in the top league and done it consistently?

“The Championship was more of a level playing field last season with not too many big boys in it, but it will be tougher this time.”
