Bradford are celebrating winning the Yorkshire Inter-District Union title for only the third time in their history.

They defeated Sheffield by a whopping 28-8 in the wind and rain at Bradford Golf Club and, with Leeds beating fellow title contenders Teesside 23-12 at Woolley Park, it meant the trophy came to Bradford for the first time in four years.

The three sides went into the final day separated by only a point and victory for leaders Teesside would have meant they took the title.

But the crown finished up with Tim Wade and his boys, despite their 22-14 defeat to Teesside at Skipton in the penultimate fixture.

Wade confessed: "I thought the result at Hawksworth would have been a lot closer, maybe 19-17 or 20-16, but the weather conditions helped us with our greater local knowledge.

"We hadn't taken Sheffield to Hawksworth since 1991 and it was typical Hawksworth weather on Sunday.

"It was so bad that I never ventured out of the clubhouse and the 12 players on each side were all heroes."

Wade added: "I thought Leeds would beat Teesside because they were playing at a course I had never even seen - Woolley Park, between Wakefield and Barnsley, which is some 6,700 yards long.

"We should have played Leeds there but they moved the match to Cookridge."

One of the features of the season for Bradford was the flowering of their leading juniors, such as Adam Sagar and Liam O'Neill from Keighley and Bradford Open champion James Simpson (Shipley).

Wade said: "Victory overall means a lot to Bradford golf because of the emergence of the juniors and we have been helped there tremendously by Bradford Junior League organiser Peter Delaney.

"I thought the juniors would come through next year but they came through this year instead.

"That will stand us in good stead for 2007, which we will start planning for after Sunday's Yorkshire Inter-District Union Six-Man Team Championships at Horsforth.

"Our success was down to a lot of good team performances. We had a bit of a hiccup against Teesside but in general we have gelled together well."

Bradford's side on Sunday is Robert Hillas (Northcliffe), Sagar, Neil Harker-Bell (Bradford Moor), Ian Martin (Baildon), Paul Thomas (West Bradford) and Gareth Evans (Northcliffe), with Simpson as reserve.

All scores count in the eight-team event and Wade said: "We are the only team that can do the double but I think Sheffield will probably win. Second would be a good result for us."
