Leeds United player of the year Max Gradel will resist interest from Newcastle and wants to stay at Elland Road.

Gradel, 23, has a year left on his contract and says he would willingly sign a new deal if it was offered because he is happy playing regular football and grateful to Leeds for changing a career which was stagnating at Leicester.

The Ivory Coast winger or striker was named players’ player of the year and fans’ player of the year at the members’ club end of season dinner, where Jonny Howson collected the young player of the year.

Gradel said: “I’ve got one year left on my contract and the club know that. After that it’s up to them if they want me to stay. If there’s any contract on the table I’d sign it because I am very happy. The opportunity this club gave me changed my career.”

Bradley Johnson’s goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round was named goal of the season.
