The Cobbydalers end their season tomorrow and, despite their lowly position in the Vodkat North West Counties League Premier Division, they will be satisfied.

They have finished with a comfort zone between them and the relegation places which not too long ago looked unlikely.

They went into tomorrow's game at New Mills in high spirits after banking their biggest win of the season last Wednesday.

Silsden secretary and spokesman Jim Rosser said: “We were 4-0 up at half-time against Ashton Athletic and won 7-0.

"It was the first time in the season we had scored four, and we were delighted at half-time, so to get to the end with another three and none against was great.

“But we’re not getting carried away because they (Ashton) are bottom of the league and, to be honest, they looked it.

"Ashton have conceded over a hundred goals in the league but the seven we got only meant we were not the bottom of the goals-scored list.

“That just says to you that it was two poor teams - well, two clubs that have struggled through the season. We have only been safe thanks to a late run but it happens.

“Ashton were relegated last year but then reprieved because Nelson hit financial problems and couldn’t continue at this level. I’m sure Ashton would have liked the respite of a season in Division One to regroup but they have had to stay in the Premier.

“We have had our problems after so many seasons paying rent at Cougar Park but we are back at our own ground now and should be in a position to push on from now. That is after avoiding relegation, as that would have been a nightmare.”
