Nuneaton 0 Guiseley 1

The Lions broke their spell of games without a win but the three points banked from their trip to Nuneaton failed to move them closer to the play-off places.

Guiseley remain seventh while Nuneaton stay in fourth place, 11 points better off but having played five more games than Steve Kittrick’s men. However, the tension is beginning to mount now as leaders Telford were the only winners in the top four.

Guiseley had a good start in the Midlands when leading scorer James Walshaw saw a left-footed shot cleared off the line in the eighth minute and Danny Boshell’s shot a minute later flew over the crossbar.

On the half hour, a Warren Payton corner was just scrambled away and another Boshell effort was just too high but Guiseley did go into the break a goal to the good.

With eight minutes to go before the interval, Danny Forrest lobbed the home keeper and, though he back-peddled to get a hand on the ball, it still sailed in. Lions striker Joe O’Neil had gone close late in the first half and he went even closer just after the hour mark.

He brought a cross under control and chipped the keeper but as the ball hit the back of the net the referee’s whistle went and the goal was disallowed.

Dave Merris, Forrest and Darryn Stamp all had shots blocked or saved as the Lions bossed the chances count.

Guiseley keeper Steve Drench only had one save to make in the first half and had to deal with a testing free-kick after the interval.

Guiseley spokesman Stuart Allen said: “We were not entirely convincing but we battled well.

“If we got the rub of the green, which I believe was the case, then it was overdue because we have played well and deserved something more than two points from the previous six league games.

“The points are the main thing at this stage of the season and we just needed that win to get back on track. We hope it’s a good omen going into tomorrow’s game at home to Stafford Rangers.”

Nicky Law’s Alfreton Town could only draw at home to Hyde at the weekend, while third-placed Boston were beaten.

They lost to Solihull, who remain in fifth – the occupants of the last play-off place.

That victory has maintained the eight-point gap between the Lions and the play-offs, and they have only played two more games.
