Everything stops for the international weekend.

Well, not entirely everyone.

The bottom two divisions have run a full fixture-list barring one postponement – for international call-offs – in League One.

Six of the remaining 23 were played last night, four take place tomorrow and there’s also a game at Oldham on Monday night.

Twelve have stoically stuck to the traditional Saturday, albeit at rejigged kick-off times to avoid a clash with Wales and England.

All except one of course… Valley Parade should have the undivided attention of Jeff Stelling and the Soccer Saturday mob as the only league game in the country taking place at exactly the same moment as the Euro 2012 qualifier in Cardiff.

City have come in for the inevitable stick for not switching from 3pm but they cannot be blamed in this instance.

Shrewsbury wouldn’t play ball with Friday or Sunday and City refused to cough up a £3,000 overnight hotel bill to kick off two hours earlier.

Overnight? According to the AA website, the drive should take around two and a quarter hours door to door.

The only other option was a 5pm start. It seemed the most sensible choice – but would have needed a police presence and extra costs again.

Here’s where the idiot minority ruin it for the rest of us again.

The rise in disturbing incidents around home games – and not just items being lobbed at referees and opposing players – has meant there is more scrutiny on Valley Parade matchdays.

Problems outside the ground may not directly fall under City’s control but they are still on the club’s “footprint” as the police call it.

So they would not allow a game to go ahead at tea-time without sufficient security, particularly when some will have spent the previous couple of hours “fuelling up” watching England in the pub.

It’s easy to blame Shrewsbury for their intransigence but those who must now decide between the two games might want to look a bit closer to home for a villain.
