Andy Hughes has bid an emotional farewell to Leeds United after his move to Scunthorpe last Friday.

The popular midfielder, who was part of the team that won promotion to the npower Championship, said his four years at Elland Road were the best of his career.

Hughes joined Leeds from Norwich on the day the club was hit with a 15-point penalty as they slipped into League One and went on to make 139 appearances.

He said: "People say that clubs save players, and I would say that Leeds saved my career and gave me the biggest kick up the rear. It changed me.

"It made me appreciate playing in teams that fans expect to win all the time. That pressure of playing for a club like that is something a lot of players never get to experience."

Meanwhile, Neil Kilkenny is hoping to sort out a new deal at Leeds before his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Currently in Qatar with the Australian national team, who meet Japan in the final of the Asian Cup on Saturday, Kilkenny told journalists: "Discussions have started. They have been going on for a long time, so we’ll wait and see when I get back.

"If Leeds want to keep me they know I want to stay. The ball is in their court."
