Bradford Sunday Alliance League champions West Bowling’s first venture into the FA Sunday Cup ended yesterday when they were beaten 5-2 by Mariners from Ormskirk.

However, if the West Riding County FA Sunday Cup holders had put away their chances, especially in the first half, they could have won.

The visitors moved in front in the early stages but Chris Wood equalised from a Damian Melvin cross.

Bowling were the better side in this period and should have gone in front but the visitors caught them cold at the start of the second half with two goals within five minutes, and from that point the hosts were chasing the match.

A Melvin header gave the home team some hope but with Bowling trying to restore parity, gaps appeared at the back and the visitors scored two more goals, despite having a penalty saved.

Stocks Lane Rangers, from Division 1A, produced the shock result in the Bradford & District FA Sunday Senior Cup by defeating Premier Division leaders Bolton Woods in the third round.

The lower-division team took an early lead through Lee Johnston and doubled it when Joe Dodds struck.

The Premier Division team then replied before Mathew Hannan re-stored the hosts’ two-goal cushion. Sam Bruce then added a fourth before the Premier leaders pulled back a late consolation goal.

Mill Lane, runaway First Division leaders, locked horns with Premier giants Buttershaw White Star and were much the better team in the first half, leading 3-1 at the interval with strikes from David Pemberton, Stephen Hollingworth and Michael Hall, with John Selby replying.

In the second half, the Premier team took control and a double from Jordan Missin and a 75th-minute strike from Chris Graham ensured the visitors progressed.

Dudley Hill Rangers were too strong for Division One team Allerton, John Elam and James Firth each getting a brace, while, in a five-goal thriller at Canal Road, Shipley Hockney were seconds away from forcing penalties against Thornton. Dave Wilson put the visitors in front, only for Adam Tomlinson to equalise.

Joel Étienne gave the visitors the lead, only for Tomlinson to level. In the last minute, Jason Butters scored for the visitors but the drama was still not over.

Rob Green thought he had equalised for the hosts with the last kick of the match but the referee had blown for time before the ball crossed the line!

Sunday football newcomers Springfield United, from Division Four, caused the biggest upset in the Bradford & District FA Sunday Cup by winning on penalties at Division 2A Bankfoot Lions, Hubert Kellett getting the decisive spot-kick. Liam Parsons had earlier scored a brace for the visitors in a 2-2 draw.

In a good, well-fought game at Girlington, Shoulder of Mutton, from Division 2A, were the better team against Delius, and a first-half strike from Craig Jones gave them a well-deserved lead.

Further strikes from Jason Walton and Martin Charles put them out of reach but their opponents grabbed a late consolation goal through Andrew Thorpe.

Undercliffe were too good for Bradford Moor, winning 6-3 with Michael Reynolds hitting a brace for the victors.

Inter Mill Lane had a two-goal victory at Dudley Hill Keys, with Brendan Cheshire and Daren Hadley on the scoresheet.
