Lee Bullock column

It’s been a few weeks since we had such a nice Monday morning.

Nobody finds it easy to come back in to work after we’ve been beaten at the weekend or performed badly. So you could see the big difference in the changing room after the Gillingham win. All the lads were buzzing.

It always feels better when you score the winner in the last minute. We’d played better but you thought it was going to end 0-0 and then Willo popped up with that header.

I didn’t have a clue about Lee Hendrie signing until last Friday morning. We saw him in the building and all wondered “what’s he doing here?”

Myself, Rammers and Flynny can remember watching him play for Villa in the Premier League. Some of the younger lads were asking if he used to be a good player!

But it’s a brilliant signing and has given the whole place a bit of a buzz. The atmosphere in the crowd definitely lifted with his presence in the second half.

Leon also came on at half-time and tried to single-handedly take on everyone down the right-hand side.

Their captain was trying to rough him up but you saw he’s got a bit about him. He got whacked into the sidelines and a few other heavy tackles but he looked ready to go toe-to-toe with at least three of their players.

I know he got booked but that’s the type of controlled aggression you like to see and it gave everyone a lift. Fans love to see a good 50-50 battle on the pitch and we couldn’t wait for the next tackle to come our way.

It made it more special when we nicked the goal at the end. As a proper northern lad, it’s always nice to send a team back down south with no points.

We’ve got a couple of tough away games now but hopefully last week can be the launchpad.

From the Championship down to our division, it’s so tight in all the leagues. A few might run away with it in the Premier League but at our level it only takes back-to-back wins to shoot you anywhere.
